Changing the color of the Start Menu (and Taskbar)
You can easily change the color of your Start Menu and Taskbar. Go to Settings → Personalization → Colors to get started. Windows allows you to select one accent color from a pre-created group, or you can fine-tune the accent color by clicking the Advanced Color button. Just click on any color you want to use. You can also let Windows choose an accent color based on current backgrounds by selecting the Automatically select primary background color option.
After choosing an accent color, the next step is to choose the places where this color will be used. Scroll down a bit to the More Options section. Two options will be available to you: “In the Start menu, on the taskbar and in the notification center” and “In the title bars”. The first option uses an accent color as the background for your Start Menu, Taskbar, and Action Center, and highlights certain elements in those places—such as app icons on the Start Menu. The second option uses the accent color for the title bar of your active window.
Unfortunately, the Start Menu, Taskbar, and Action Center items are grouped together and you can't set different colors for them. You can "dig" a little in the registry, but this will not completely solve the problem.
In the color personalization screen, you will also find a Transparency Effect option to make the Start Menu, Taskbar and Action Center transparent. This setting does not affect the accent color if it is used for these elements.
And finally, you can enable dark mode for settings and apps.
Causes of the “hanging” taskbar
As it is now fashionable to say “this is not a bug, but a feature”. In fact, there are several reasons after which the taskbar freezes on the screen: a glitch in the browser through which you are looking. Or a failure in the “Explorer” program of the Windows operating system itself.
The “Explorer” program is a standard program of the Windows family of systems. She is responsible for displaying windows, folders and the same taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
When Explorer crashes, almost all windows freeze, and on minor crashes, the taskbar “sticks” to the bottom of the screen. To fix this without restarting the computer, restart the Explorer itself.
Adding and removing folders in the Windows 10 Start menu
In some of my articles, I described solutions to issues and suggested entering Windows 10 Settings by pressing the Start button and selecting the item of the same name in the menu. But recently I came across a laptop with a ten, which did not have this item! I was surprised and decided to figure out how to add and remove folders in the Start menu.
As a result, it was possible to find out where hiding and showing folders are configured. True, you cannot place any folders that you want in the Start menu, but only from a list predefined by Microsoft.
First of all, let's find out - how to enter the Settings if they are not displayed in the Start menu? There are two ways. The first is to press the Win + i hotkeys. Second - click on the Notification Center icon and select All options, as shown in the picture:
A window with options will open in front of you. Go to Personalization, select the Start item on the left and click the link with the name Choose which folders will be displayed in the Start menu.
And here is the complete list of folders, I have 10 of them. It may be different for you, but the essence remains the same. Move the slider under the parameter name to the left or right, depending on which ones you want to keep and which ones you want to disable.
Personally, I turned on Personal Folder, Options and Downloads. I have Explorer pinned to the taskbar, access to the rest of the folders can be obtained through the Explorer itself, they are always in sight. The Network item opens the network environment (if there are several devices on the local network).
This is how you can change folders in the Start menu. The choice is not too big, as you can see. But if you need quick access to any of your arbitrary folders, then I recommend that you read the article on the topic of pinning folders to the quick access panel.

How to restart Explorer
If the browser crashes, it will help to close it and restart it. Many online players have a feature that will allow you to continue watching where you left off. If there is no desire to restart the browser or this did not help, see the instructions below. The instruction is the same for Windows 7.8, Vista and 10th version, with only minor differences.
- Launch the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del or Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- On the “Processes” tab, look for the “Explorer” program.
- Right-click and select “Restart”.
Restart the Explorer
- If you couldn't find it, go to the “Details” tab and look for the explorer.exe process
- When found, right click and select "End Task".
We end the explorer.exe process
If you have Windows below version 10 (for example, 7.8 or Vista) - also look for the process, right-click and select "End Task" or "End Process".
After the program ends, all icons from the desktop and the Taskbar itself may disappear. There is no need to be afraid - we will start everything again.
Launch File Explorer
Open the Task Manager again, then click “File” and “Run new task”.
Start a new task
You can also press the key combination Windows + R. In the window that opens, write the command explorer.exe and press Enter.
Launch File Explorer
How to hide or show folders in the Windows 10 Start menu?
The Windows 10 Start Menu can be configured to display folders such as Documents, Downloads, Network or HomeGroup and more. By default, they are not displayed in the Start menu, but they can be added with a couple of clicks.
How to display and select folders to display in the Windows 10 Start Menu
If no significant changes have been made to the Start menu, the left column will look something like the image below. You may be interested: "How to pin a folder to the Windows 10 taskbar?"
By following a few steps, you can display additional folders in the Start menu. For this you need to open. Read about ways to open Settings in Windows 10. Alternatively, click on in the menu.
The next step is to select in the settings window.
Next, in the newly appeared window, you need to click on in the column on the left.
After this action, on the right you can see the link Select which folders will be displayed in the Start menu. This link must be followed.
Now you can select which folders should be displayed. It will not be possible to select absolutely any folder on the computer, the choice can only be made from the proposed options: Explorer, Settings, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos, Homegroup, Network, Personal folder.
To enable the display of any of the available folders in the menu, you just need to set the position to, and if hidden, then to the position.
The start menu will look different depending on the number of selected folders.
The setting that adds additional folders to the Start menu is very simple and fast, and it also hides unnecessary folders. Unfortunately, there is no way to add your own folders to the list (the left side of the Start menu), but it is possible to pin various elements of Windows 10 to the right side.
Tasks have two main options: restart the browser or the work of Explorer in Windows. For the laziest, you can simply restart your computer and the problem will disappear for a while. Also a good option would be to automatically hide the panel from the screen. Write in the comments which method you used. And also let us know if these instructions did not help - we will find new options. We hope that in the next updates of the system, developers will remove this problem completely.
How to remove shortcuts from the Start menu in Windows 8 and 8.1?
The Start menu in Windows 8 and 8.1 contains shortcuts to installed programs, games, applications, and more. Given that there can be a lot of shortcuts, and navigating the Metro interface with a bunch of graphic elements (tiles) is not easy, a solution suggests itself - remove unnecessary unused shortcuts.
Cleaning the Start menu from shortcuts is very simple. Open the Start itself and right-click on the unnecessary shortcut. A task bar will appear below - in it we select the very first action: Unpin from the start screen (that is, remove from Start). After that, the shortcut will disappear from the menu.
How to remove shortcuts from the All Apps menu in Windows 8/8.1
In Windows 8/8.1, you can access the more comprehensive All Apps (or All Programs) menu from the Start menu. Here, you can also right-click on any shortcut, but you won’t be able to delete it - you can pin the selected shortcut to Start or unpin it.
To delete a shortcut in the "All applications" menu, you need to open the system folder where they are stored. These are: C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
fix the problem
The reason for the question of how to remove the quick access to folders and files is the reason that a similar function provided by the developers for the convenience of working on a computer interferes while watching a video or playing your favorite game in full-scale mode.
First of all, you need to view the mood directly in the game or video itself. If the parameters are all correctly configured in them, then you will need to deal with the settings of the quick access line.
The easiest way to hide the taskbar (taskbar) is to set the auto-hide mode. A similar function is inherent in all versions of Windows, although directly on 10 it is slightly modified. But in principle, this does not change the essence.
To make automatic configuration, you need to perform the following actions:
In the same way, you can remove the line with fixed folders or files, but by setting "Auto-hide the taskbar in tablet mode" settings. With the help of such manipulations, you can remove the shortcut bar from the monitor screen while watching a video or playing your favorite games directly in full screen.
Software applications from third-party developers
If the standard way of hiding the taxbar did not give the desired result, you can use third-party programs created specifically to solve such a problem. Two programs should be singled out that have good reviews from users.
This is a program that does not need to be specially installed on the computer. The essence of the presented utility is that it allows the user to call up and hide the Start menu displayed on the taskbar, regardless of whether the computer is in full screen mode or not.
In addition, you can set hotkeys that will allow you to hide and call applications that were launched directly on top of the desktop.
Taskbar AutoHide Control
The indicated program does not require direct installation on a PC, but can help solve the problem of hiding the shortcut bar for folders and files. Its peculiarity is that it allows you to fix the key combination that the user has marked to open or hide the launchpad, where the necessary notes for work are displayed.
If it is impossible to make settings to remove the taxbar from the screen, you can simply try to arrange it by reducing the icons, such This will free some of the monitor, but for some users this is not a solution.
It is imperative to point out the fact that the problem with the freezing of the panel where frequently used folders, files and programs on the desktop are displayed during full screen mode can be hidden in the Explorer tab. This is due to the fact that the designated tab is responsible for the operation of the shortcut bar on the PC desktop. Therefore, you can try to restart the "Explorer".
To restart, you will need to perform the following actions:
After performing the indicated actions, the quick access panel should restart and work regardless of the mode in which the computer is running. If the above method did not solve the indicated problem, then you can try another option.
To do this, open the "Start" tab, where you can find the name explorer.ex, which is located in the "Details" tab. Next, you need to right-click the computer mouse on the indicated program "explorer.ex", where after clicking on it a small menu will be displayed. In it, select the item "End task".
Further, the taxbar will disappear from the screen, as well as other elements located in the "Explorer". Next, you need to open the "File" menu directly, which is located in the "Task Manager" tab and find the "Start a new task" column in it. By clicking on the marked line, a window will appear where you can display the action of the commands. In this window, you should register the command "explorer" and be sure to press the "Enter" key.
Thanks to these actions, you can restart the existing "Explorer" on a personal computer, thereby solving the problem with displaying a panel with various files, folders and programs in full screen mode.
Summing up, it should be said that if the user needs to remove any file or folder from the quick access line, then you can safely do it. That is, the removal of the icons depicted on it does not lead to the fact that the original program that was previously installed on the PC will be deleted.
How to hide the list of applications in the Windows 10 Start menu
With the release of v1703 April Big Update, Windows 10 has a lot of new settings. One of the new settings for the Start menu is the ability to hide the list of applications, and in today's article we will look at how to do this.
By default in Windows 10, the Start menu displays your selected folders, all apps, and tiles.
You can remove all applications in a couple of minutes, without third-party software and without having to dig into the registry editor. Previously, we looked at the various settings of the Start menu, today's article is a continuation of the topic.
1. Open the Start menu and select Settings.
2. Go to "Personalization".
3. In the left column, select "Start", in the right side, find "Show a list of applications in the Start menu" and next to this item, left-click on the switch to turn it to the "Off" position.
Close the settings window, go to the start menu and see how it has changed. Now all applications will not be displayed, but they can be accessed by left-clicking on the “All Applications” icon that appears in the left panel.
Making a desktop like on Windows 7
Hello, our dear readers! Surely, you also encountered such a problem: the desktop after installing Windows 10 has become completely different, unusual. The main icons (documents, my computer) disappeared, the ability to add widgets disappeared. This article will tell you how to return the old functionality.
No need to be scared and think that everything is lost. And certainly you should not think about returning to the "seven". The icons have not gone away - the developers have moved them to the Start menu, turning them into attractive tiles. But there is one catch: there is no way to move them to the desktop. What to do? Now you will know.
Returning familiar icons
There are several ways to do this, the main advantage of which is simplicity. Right-click on the desktop, select the "Personalization" item in the context menu:
This action will take us to the settings window. You should select "Themes" in the left list, and click on the "Icon Options" link on the right:
Want to change the background? In the previous window, there is a separate item for this. The settings are simple and will be clear without further explanation. And to visualize the standby mode, select "Lock screen" and at the bottom of the right block we find the link "Screensaver settings".
A couple of clicks and icons on the desktop
You will see a window where you need to check the boxes next to the icons that you want to return to the desktop. Confirm your choice by clicking the "Apply" or "Finish" button.
This way you will place the deleted (more precisely, hidden) icons in the “tens” workspace. The developers did not pursue the goal of hiding the necessary functions from you, they provided a choice. You need a basket - take it, you need quick access to the control panel - get it. Just tick the required icon!
By the way, in the previous window, you can change the appearance of the icons by clicking on the "Change icon..." button. The choice is small, but there is. If you want to diversify the design of not only the desktop, but also windows, the taskbar, and other elements, then you can find themes (there are a lot of them on the network) and install them on your PC.
A couple more tricky ways
I don't know about you, but I often had problems with displaying the "Personalization" item. There may be several reasons for this, but we will not go into it now. So, in order to access the design settings, you should open the “Control Panel”, enter “icons” in the search field. Among the results, the section "Personalization" will appear, which disappeared from the context menu:
Further actions were described earlier in this article.
The following method is very simple and requires only a few correct keystrokes. First you need to open the Run console (Win + R), where you can write the following set of commands:
1 Rundll32 shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,, 5
Rundll32 shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,,5
Let's reveal a little secret: you can simply copy the line above and paste it into the input field. At the end, click "OK":
We figured out the icons. And did you succeed? If not, we are waiting for your questions in the comments. If so, we hope for flattering reviews + likes.
Many people are interested in how to change the size of icons on the Desktop. Now there will be a big instruction on this.
As you can see, there is nothing complicated.
Extending the functionality of the desktop
Using Windows 7, many are used to widgets that provide users with additional functionality and various useful information. But in the "ten" they were removed from the basic configuration. The developers tried to replace them with Start menu tiles, but not everyone liked this implementation.
Now we will look at two applications that will help make your desktop lively and interesting.
Completely free software that provides access to the old features available on the "seven". Even the interface is the same. So you will not get confused in the settings.
After installing the application, call the context menu on the desktop. A new item should appear - "Gadgets":
Now you can return the clock, information about CPU and memory usage, calendar, exchange rates, weather and much more:
More functional software that is distributed disinterestedly, but has some problems with translation into Russian. Not such a snag, right?
In addition to the standard set of gadgets, switching to the advanced selection mode is available, where additional functions are presented (system monitors, value and currency converters, volume control, etc.).
I hope my recommendations have helped you. If you have any questions or something doesn't work, I'm waiting for comments.
Disabling ads on the lock screen
The current version of Windows 10 displays ads on the lock screen through a special Windows Spotlight feature. Sometimes this feature just showcases a cute wallpaper on the screen, and sometimes annoying ads for games like Rise of the Tomb Raider and Quantum Break, which are only available through the Windows Store.
In order to remove ads from the Windows 10 computer on the lock screen, I suggest doing the following. Open the "Lock screen" item in the desktop settings. You can do this in the following sequence of transitions: menu "Options" -> "Personalization" section —> subsection “Lock Screen” (Settings —> Personalization —> Lock Screen) In the right window, in the “Background” section, you need to change the desktop background. Instead of calling it "Windows Spotlight", select "Picture" or "Slideshow" from the drop-down menu.
I also advise you to turn off the item “Display fun facts, jokes, tips and other information on the lock screen” in this window (Get fun facts, tips, and more from Windows and Cortana on your lock screen). This will help you disable the display of all the entertainment and advertising nonsense provided by the commercial Windows content service and Cortana.
Why does full screen mode turn on?
The function of full-screen display of a section is considered a distinctive external feature of the tenth Windows.
- customizable interface (the ability to group folders, place in the desired sequence);
- display of blocks in the mode of full filling of the desktop space;
- is not available on previous versions of the Windows operating platform.
The specified way of arranging folders, documents and sections can be turned on and off by the user. More suitable for users working with touch monitors and portable laptops.
Attention! The main reason for unauthorized resetting is considered to be the installation of current updates to the Windows operating system. The problem is solved by executing a separate instruction; additional help from the wizard is not required.
How to remove ads from your Windows 10 computer in Start menu “themed” apps
In addition to displaying regular ads, Windows 10 occasionally displays themed programs on the Start menu that seem to match your interests. But, as you might expect, these programs are not completely free. Which, again, is of no interest to us. For example, Microsoft uses this feature to advertise their useless but $60 games that you can download from the Windows Store. But this is not the most important thing. After all, they simply “eat up” such a valuable place for us on the Start menu screen.
In order to disable the display of "thematic" applications, go to the "Start" item. We do this similarly to the previous paragraph:
Options menu -> "Personalization" section —> subsection "Start" (Settings -> Personalization -> Start).
In the right window, set the checkbox "Occasionally show suggestions in Start" to "Off" (Off). So we disable this annoying option once and for all. Of course, this can be canceled later. The main thing is to know how to remove ads from a Windows 10 computer.
Getting rid of annoying prompts
So, we figured out the advertising recommendations! Let's move on to tips that also look like advertisements when loading Windows 10. The latest OS is full of dozens of supposedly "useful" tips, which primarily serve to impose Microsoft's own programs and services on the OS user. For example, one of these tips recommends using the Microsoft Edge software to extend battery life. Even tastier, this hint promises you bonus Microsoft Points if you use Microsoft Edge. But we won't fall for them, right? See another tip on how to remove ads from your Windows 10 PC.
If you want to use native apps without annoying Microsoft prompts, you can try disabling them. To do this, open the Notifications & Actions docker as follows:
Options Menu -> System section -> subsection "Notifications and actions" (Settings -> System -> Notifications & Actions).
Here just uncheck the Get tips, tricks, and suggestions as you use Windows option. Move the checkbox to the "Off" position.
Preventing Cortana voice assistant from showing pop-up windows on the taskbar
The new Cortana voice assistant, which initially impresses everyone, will not “sit” in the taskbar and wait for you to speak to it. Cortana regularly shows up by offering to get a hint.
If you don't want Cortana to annoy you, click on the Cortana search bar, then click on the "Settings" icon, scroll down the list of options and turn off the "Taskbar Tidbits" option. After that, Cortana will hide in her house and will sit there until you need her.
If you want to disable Cortana at all, it's possible through the registry or group policy. But this is a topic for a completely different article.
By the way, did you notice that I wrote all the menu items in English? This is a necessary measure, because Cortana for the Russian version of Windows 10 does not work yet. So this advice on how to remove prompts and ads from a Windows 10 computer is only suitable for those who know English and own the appropriate version of the OS.
We remove the bottom taskbar on Windows 10 on our own
How can I remove the taskbar at the bottom of the screen on the tenth Windows, this question often arises from users who are faced with the fact that this line is not hidden when working in full screen mode.
Windows 10 is an updated version, which is a program with quite convenient functionality, but some changes, for example, settings have been transferred to other blocks or to created additional folders.
Uninstalling Candy Crush Saga and other automatically installed applications
Windows 10 automatically downloads "necessary" applications such as Candy Crush Soda Saga and Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition. Worse, she might install them. This happens immediately after your first login to your account. In addition, some major computer manufacturers may install their own software - so to speak "by default".
These applications are being installed as part of the new Microsoft Consumer Experience program. There was previously an option to turn this off using Group Policies, but that option has now been removed in "lower" versions of Windows 10. Only Windows 10 Enterprise users today can turn off the installation of these products themselves.
But today I will show you how to do it, regardless of the version. First, to remove unnecessary applications, open the Start menu, find the corresponding image among the tiles and right-click on it. Select "Uninstall" or "Uninstall" from the context menu.
Some applications may be displayed among tiles without being fully downloaded from the web. In order to remove such tiles, simply right-click on them and select "Unpin from Start" from the menu.
For such tiles, you will not find an item in the context menu to uninstall the “Uninstall” application, since they are only a link to the online Windows Store, from where it can be downloaded.
Checking system files
If the panel does not retract, then most likely the problem may be due to corrupted files. Troubleshooting can be done using the command line. Let's consider this process step by step.
- Execute the keyboard shortcut Win + X. Select "Command Prompt (Admin)" from the menu that opens.
- In the application that opens, type the following command and press the Enter key. It must be pressed every time after entering a new line.
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
- As a result of the check, you will see the following.
No problems found in this case. If you get the message "The component store needs to be restored", then this is bad.
- To be sure, enter one more command.
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
- The progress can be observed by percentage. It is recommended not to do anything and not to load the system once again. Since the hard drive is heavily loaded during the check.
- After finishing the procedure, you will see the following.
Although a superficial test was positive, a deeper test proved otherwise.
Turning off Live Tiles and removing applications from the Windows Start screen
Although you can uninstall a number of applications installed as part of the Microsoft Consumer Experience program yourself, Windows 10 contains quite a lot of adware that cannot be deleted. For example, tiles like the Store and Xbox often use the live tile effect to advertise apps and games that Microsoft wants to sell you.
To turn off live ad tiles, right-click and select "Turn live tile off" ("More" -> "Turn live tile off"). Or click on the item "Remove from the initial screen" in order to remove this tile from the screen completely.
This concludes my review of hints on how to remove ads from a windows 10 computer. Although I do not rule out that you know a dozen more alternative methods, including the registry editor and group policies. But this is suitable for more advanced users and will be included in my next article. See you!
Do you want to remove shortcuts for installed programs from the Windows 10 Start menu, but you don't want to remove entire games and programs?
There is a way to remove or rename programs and folders from the Start menu. How to do it?
When you install a program or game, an icon is created in start to launch the application.
Sometimes new appearances are not limited to a single shortcut, and separate links to program settings are also added.
Programs create whole menu folders that contain not only shortcuts to launch the application, but also help files, registration links, or text files with documentation.
In short, after a while, Start gets terribly full of junk. The obvious way to put things in order is to remove the excess.
To do this, we right-click on the selected shortcut and we already want to select the “Delete” option, and suddenly it turns out that such a function simply does not exist.
We can only remove the program we no longer want or only remove the icon.
